Lotanna first discovered the country’s small, local gemstone mines by driving around the north of the country. “People were dressed in tattered clothes but owned mines worth millions,” she recalls. “I wanted to shout out about it.” Ms Egwuatu says there used to be a small jewellery industry in Nigeria, but it all but died out when younger generations decided to pursue what she calls “quick money” instead of crafts.
